Foldings and Rubbings is the 50th work within the Move series, which includes zines, books, and group art exhibitions by California-based artist, Rich Jacobs. Jacobs’ work is featured on album covers, skateboard decks, and in galleries on an international scale. “Positive energy and inspiration” are cited as prominent features in his art and he uses various media, such as street art, graffiti, pen and ink, painting, and murals, to convey his messages.
Unlike some of the brightly-colored work Jacobs is known for, Foldings and Rubbings is strictly black and white. Each page is filled with a distinct, abstract pattern and takes on a textural and tactile quality. Jacobs said in an interview, “Then there are shapes and forms abstracted. They may mean nothing or maybe they mean everything, or more than words, even. You can see these everywhere, even if you just look to any side. Go on walks. It’s easy to become addicted to looking at things.” This zine is indeed like going on a walk, with the marks, cracks, and uneven surfaces of bricks or sidewalks. The act of looking becomes enthralling, as these surfaces begin to take on a life of their own.
