Founded in 1964 by artist, publisher, and theorist Dick Higgins, Something Else Press was one of the earliest U.S. publishing houses devoted to the publication of artists’ books. The Press was born out of a moment of intense Fluxus activity in New York, with Higgins studying under John Cage at The New School for Social Research, and collaborating closely with fellow Fluxus figurehead George Maciunas. In Higgins’ Press, readers encountered newfound space for what its founder termed “intermedia” works—works that settled between, or leapt across, multiple media. Concrete, visual, and found poetry; mail art; plays as poems as operas; stream-of-consciousness verse bound like a prayer book; poetry-prose that doubled as "sciart”; and novels said to “[Look] Like An Engraving.” These works straddled media, formats and fields of study as prodigiously as their makers did (take artist-writer-philosopher-scientist Bern Porter, for example). Here were, in the words of Higgins, “Things that just weren’t neat, but which seemed to me to need their audience, that seemed natural in our world.” The selection here represents a diverse set of twenty-one hardback and paperback titles from the Press, which brought its activities to a close after a decade of production. Featured publications include those by John Giorno, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, Jackson Mac Low, Bern Porter, Daniel Spoerri, Gertrude Stein, Emmett Williams, and others.
