This is the second edition of Printed Matter’s popular fundraising collaboration with Barbara Kruger. This messenger bag, originally published in 1992, is hand silk-screened with a Kruger print. The close-cropped image of a snarling canine mouth with the text “Business as Usual” is a critique of cut-throat business practices which often times prioritize profits over people. Constructed from heavy canvas, the bag features a sturdy shoulder strap and an inside pocket. This bag was printed in a limited edition of 300.
Barbara Kruger (b. 1945 in Newark, New Jersey) is a Conceptual Artist whose work often features white sans-serif text in a red text block overlaying a black and white image. This infamous style serves as a container for Kruger’s poignant feminist critique on consumerism and conservative politics. Kruger attended Syracuse University and Parsons School of Design, where she studied under Diane Arbus and Marvin Israel, in the 1960s. Barbara Kruger’s work has been shown internationally and his held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.
