“There’s nothing so underrated as a great shit is a humorous participatory installation that invites viewers to complete the piece by performing their own royal flush in the WC’s golden throne room.” Thus reads Stephen Perkins’ introduction to a small pamphlet documenting the pre-exhibition email correspondence he conducted with artist David Medalla whom he invited to work in his tiny gallery space in De Pere Wisconsin. The emails recount the manufacture and installation of a gold shit-shaped sculpture/incense burner. They are accompanied by an appendix that tells of the artist’s “University of Failure” project (1961-2003) and an artist’s biography. Each pamphlet comes with two photographs of the exhibition and a xeroxed newsclipping juxtposing Duchamp’s urinal and Medalla’s shit sculpture, the “great new icon of the 21st century.”
Also included is a signed limited edition photocopy print by Medalla.
