With a tri-fold binding of heavy cardstock printed with blue and purple stripes, this book opens up to reveal a 6-page accordion-fold pamphlet of poetry attached to the left flap, with the right opening to reveal a CD and the signatures of the artists.
The poetry consists of a “composition by Alec Finlay, from written correspondence by Chris Watson, Alec Finlay, Maria Jardardottir and Clive Powell, and transcribed interviews of video footage by Ben Ponton.” The material used in this composition relates to the arrangement and production of the field recording on the CD.
The CD contains in situ recordings from in the Cullercoats Harbour, where the artists were rowed by the Chief Helmsman for the local RNLI in a boat “complete with cloth covered rowlocks to avoid unwanted sounds.” “The rhythm of rowing runs through the composition.” Performers in the recording include Maria Jardardottir, a “performing and composing voice musician” with a “focus on improvisation and extended voice techniques, Indian Classical music, world music and electro acoustic performance and composition,” and Clive Powell, “a singer and improviser working predominantly with collected sounds and traditional song.”
