In May 2008, artist Tom Sachs presented his Bronze Collection at Gordon Bunshaft’s Lever House on Park Avenue between 53rd & 54th streets in Midtown Manhattan.
Commissioned by collector Aby Rosen, Sachs created a collection of large bronze sculptures for the building’s street level courtyard. Among the pieces, some of which measure 20 feet in height, are two quarterpipes (which form an extended half pipe) on a bed of marble, a dumpster, a collection of “Unite Lamps” (based on existing designs from Le Corbusier’s failed utopian Chandrigarh project), a series of pieces using molds of stacked car batteries as their source, two “Love Birds” and two large sculptures of Hello Kitty and Miffy - “Crying Hello Kitty Fountain” and “Crying Miffy Fountain” - in which tears perpetually stream from their eyes.
Lever House Zine contains photographs interspersed with sketches by the artist, documenting both the end results and the making of the collection in vivid detail. The result is a tactile souvenir of Sachs’ whimsical, irreverent, sometimes even moving work. With an essay by Anthony Haden-Guest.
