“Equivalents” displays photocopied pictures of clouds on the left-hand pages facing circular diagrams of the word “cloud” on the right-hand pages and includes a 2 page spread of the word diagrams, clearly marked with the language and the spelling of the word. In English and eleven other languages.
“This work was inspired by the Alfred Stieglitz photo series, ‘Equivalents.’ The graphic and photographic images which make up this book, were processed, screened, and printed using photo copy machines. The word ‘cloud’ in twelve languages were taken from Carl Buck’s ‘Dictionary of Selected Synonyms in the Principal Indo-European Languages’ (University of Chicago Press). The circular alphabetic configuration used to produce the spelling-generated images, has been a constant feature of my ongoing investigation of language since 1981.” –the Artist.
