Untitled is an eight-color screen print made with acrylic, Flashe, and screen printing inks on Stonehenge paper. In this storm of rain and lemons Owens positions her forms both within and escaping the rectangular frame placed at the work’s center, creating a continuous downward slant that places one particular citrus in the space of the zero in the +1 (808) number printed across the bottom of the work.
Known for her innovative approach to painting, artist Laura Owens (b. 1970 in Euclid, Ohio) creates figurative and abstract works that draw on influences ranging from Chinese and Japanese landscapes to clip art, typography to wallpaper, all of which lend themselves to the artist’s interest in how paintings function, both in relation to viewer’s perception and the exhibition space. For Owens, the ways in which her art is ultimately seen and consumed remains a continuously posed question within her work. Laura Owens has exhibited work both nationally and internationally at Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Whitney Museum of Art, New York, the Guggenheim, New York, among others. In 2003, Owens became the youngest artist ever awarded a survey at MOCA Los Angeles.
