“In this work I want to express something of the agility of ritual, how rituals contort our bodies and expressions, and how the erotic lies in simple acts repeated.
This project is a gentle nod to the South African photographer Sam Haskins, whose book Five Girls inspired me when I was grappling with the design of The Shaving Man.
‘Back then, none of us considered trimming our bushes, let alone our chests. This sort of grooming was still remote from my world in those last decades of the 20th Century. I started shaving my body hair ten years ago. I like how my body reveals itself to me, its shape then becoming more visible, exposed. I become more desirable to myself, more myself.’ (extract from The Shaving Man).
The Shaving Man is the 7th in a series of photobooks published since October 1st, 2016.
