Kylan Beatty’s compact CEMENT 2000 Collection One: “Talk is Cheap; Images are Cheaper” reads like an interwoven tapestry of intrusive thoughts – each one occupying levels of collaged imagery and seeming to repeat ad infinitum beyond the publication’s ledger. The subject matter broached is in part representative of populist media sources; decrepit images of celebrity bodies cascade down some pages while terms like “sky” and “coward” read next to strings of numbers, muddying any pursuit of a singular theme. Some of the terms and motifs used offer a religiosity verging on sacrilege; they are extracted from their original contexts and proposed, distorted, among chants of a different sort.
One page presents the viewer with the following statement, amidst several mangled illustrations:
“AMBITION IS LIVING HOW OTHERS WONT FOR A VISION AND A MISSION GETTING WHAT OTHERS DONT BUT THATS MISSING THE MARK”.
