In the seventh issue of Just Lookin’—a visual journal that seeks to understand queer aesthetics in mainstream media through visual comparisons and discussions—artist Aysen Gerlach takes the world of Naruto, the Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, as subject.
Titled “To All the Shinobi I’ve Loved Before” (shinobi being another word for ninja), Gerlach explores the personalities, interests, and potential ships of characters from the worlds of Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden, and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, which chronicle three generations of shinobi. In the artist’s own words, “we will dip our toes into the teeming gay tidepool that is the world of Naruto, leaving no gay stone unturned—believe it!”
