In this publication, artist Charlotte Kohlmann has selected a series of stills from a black-and-white Super 8 film she made, re-creating the narrative through what she terms “distilled parts of a moving whole.”
Sections of Kohlmann’s two-minute film are shot through a hole in a lens barrier, therefore allowing partial sight, but hyper-focus, on a single aspect of her chosen subject matter: the face of a classical statue; the view through a bus window; a couple embracing. This cinematographic technique makes reference to the publication’s title, Portalways and Loopholes, and highlights Kohlmann’s interest in the hole as a means through which discovery, viewership, and escape are enabled.
