The Fall of Deda Milos is an artist book by Gary Richman, published by Blue Book Issues in 2019. This book is number 27 in Blue Book Issues series of artists books, which are printed only once during the artist’s lifetime in an edition of 100, each copy is signed by the author. The Fall of Deda Milos is a combination of photographs, illustrations, and text about the story of the climate catastrophe of the year 535 to 536. The text included in this publication tells the story of Deda Milos, an elderly man who lived in the Valley of the Danube, between the Carpathian and the Balkan Mountains, who falls victim to senecide when the dimming of the sun and severe cold snap hits in the year 535, prompting widespread hunger and plague. Although this story is a fictional tale, the ritual killing of elderly men was a reality during the catastrophic weather event of 535, which proceeded to prompt 200 years of climate shock. In The Fall of Deda Milos, Richman draws parallels from the era of 535-536 to the current era, similarly marked by devastating climate catastrophe. This artist book is both a story of remembrance and a hopeful prayer for the potential victims of senecide in the future. Gary Richman is a professor of printmaking and drawing at the University of Rhode Island. He holds an MFA from Indiana University and a BA from Brooklyn College. Richman has published numerous limited edition artist books under the imprimatur, Blue Book Issues. His books are held in many collections, including at Tate Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Harvard University Library, Yale University Library, the Smithsonian Institute, and the Getty Research Library, among others.
