Designed by Mayfield Brooks + Carolyn A'hearn.
“Viewing Hours” the zine was created for mayfield brooks’ durational performance, “Viewing Hours,” where they bury themselves under forty pounds of compost for two hours. This performance has occurred multiple times and is an ongoing practice in mayfield’s work.
The zine documents “Viewing Hours” in the form of a mock funeral wake program or prayer card, and includes a letter to mayfield’s Black queer ancestors Marsha P. Johnson and Julius Eastman. It also includes images, text, and documentation of the ensuing movement performance, “Letters to Marsha.”
Originally debuted at The Kitchen in New York City, the zine asks, “CAN I GET A WITNESS?” as a call to action to begin the repair work of confronting anti-Black violence.
