Motion can manifest in meditative beauty or cataclysmic change. Velocities is inspired by the widening circles on the surface of a pond and undulations below ground during an earthquake.
Residing in the San Francisco Bay Area along the San Andreas and Hayward fault zones—notable for the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 and Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 respectively—Sarah Klein is accustomed to the jolts and rumbles from living atop shaky ground. In this book, Klein relates both printmaking and animation through the radial motion of waves. Each page presents an image sequence that pulsates and ripples in varying magnitudes when animated through the mind’s eye or when using a GIF application on a smart device.
