Jeffrey Gibson has produced a new editioned artwork in support of Printed Matter / St Marks on the occasion of Printed Matter’s Virtual Art Book Fair.
“The adorned figures that appear on the POWER FULL t-shirt all exist as stand alone sculptures. I began this series of figurative works in 2015 as proposals for new identities that are combinations of aesthetics and materials drawn from various subcultures. Over the years the figures have evolved into non gendered, non raced, figurative representations of identities yet to be defined. They express the freedom of being unnamed and undefined in didactic identification terminology. This is their POWER, and they are FULL of it. The figurative works have led to wearable garments and it makes sense to have their images adorn a t-shirt designed for POWER FULL individuals. I want to celebrate and support people who self identify themselves and have created their own space that accommodates who they are.” —Jeffrey Gibson
