Sardine Magozine began in 1999 when Charlie McAlister typed letters to seafood product companies as Denise Dawes von Kizer, Susan F. Reed, a mother, or other innocent, upset, or confused consumers. Charlie made contact with the corporate entities, steering letters in the PR office into a playful performance, asking for more information and telling them to admit they are wrong. 12 issues were created in total.
Charlie’s collages of interviews, recipes, interludes, and tangential nonfiction are reproduced on photocopied pages. The C.M. Friends & Family Archival Team reissues this work. All magozine reproductions are made from the original master collage on a copy machine. Each magozine is stamped with month and year of copying. Reproduction and packaging by Celie Dailey (Cindy Flowers), screenprinting by PROK/Dana Heikes (Dirka Dir), in Charleston, SC. Thank you Will Milner, Jamie McAlister, and all friends and family.
Please contact Denise Dawes von Kizer (denisedawesvonkizer@spewgeyser.com) if you find any error with our product. Each package is unique. Proceeds benefit the further archiving, exhibition, and reproduction of the visual art and music of Charlie McAlister.
“Get through an issue and you’ll be holding your sides from laughter and nausea. One of the most brilliant publications I’ve ever seen.” - Mole Magazine, Jeff Bagato
“It’s never in fashion so it’s never out of fashion.” - Percival Snacks, Trinkets and Snacks, Flannel Banjo catalog
“I consider one of the great undiscovered…texts? publications? …things of our era; when I first discovered it – I think he sent me a copy – I stayed up until late at night howling with laughter. It was an extension of his music, but the literary nature of his project was perhaps a little easier to see in it; though he alone wrote the zine, its contents were credited to a consistent cast of characters, all sea-faring men and women whose personae Charlie seemed to have all mapped out in his head.” - John Darnielle
