Balam No. 9 transcends the printed matter: it is a vindication of those masculinities marginalized in a toxic system that prioritizes identical and serialized models, canned from the gondola of what should be. Under a vision -and many eyes- queer, the selected images show the role that the photographic practice played and plays in the codification, experimentation and construction of the masculine in contemporary society.
The new masculinities are not new; ignored, they have always existed. We invite, then, projects that subvert the rules of the normative white male, discuss the power relations that nurture notions of “masculinity” and, above all, redefine the path and acceptance of queers, trans identities, crossdressers, racialized subjects and the infinite ways of being within the LGBTIQ+ community. -Publisher
