This is a zine made by Ben with Citation Needed.
“Do work son” and “good job” say the shape drawings to the reader. Composed on post-its and graph paper, this brief book details common facial expressions and classic sayings by shapes.
Ben is a 3rd grader. Being able to make people happy is important to him. Ben was doodling with a “tencil,” when he says he “made shapes on a piece of paper and for each shape I would give them a special body. Then I got the idea of putting them on post- its and then compiling those post-its on a big piece of paper. I made different kinds of shapes and sizes, I even made monsters. That’s how I came up with The World of Shapes.”
Ben will continue to make quick and short books.
Citation Needed is an intergenerational publishing initiative, supporting the creation and production of artist books by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Through a weekly workspace, participants generate individual and collaborative books, utilizing photocopiers, typewriters, and a range of drawing materials. Citation Needed provides project-based arts experiences for children while amplifying their voices through the printed matter and book arts. This initiative is led by artist Ari Wolff, in collaboration with the 14th Street Y After School and Printed Matter / St Marks.
