A zine made by Maia with Citation Needed.
Spooky tells the story of a mysterious girl, a flying doll, a talking ghost dog, and a secret white room. Written in a single sitting, Maia’s fast-paced writing style and abstract drawings give this long and tall artist book a feeling of urgency and eeriness.
Maia lives in Parkchester in the Bronx. Maia’s school is Success Academy in Manhattan, 14th Street Union Square and she is good at math and ELA and even science and chess. Maia loves dancing, art, and writing, and also math. Her best friends are Samantha, London, Symphony, Nizinga, and Prissela. Maia loves being home with her mom and decorating.
Citation Needed is an intergenerational publishing initiative, supporting the creation and production of artist books by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Through a weekly workspace, participants generate individual and collaborative books, utilizing photocopiers, typewriters, and a range of drawing materials. Citation Needed provides project-based arts experiences for children while amplifying their voices through the printed matter and book arts. This initiative is led by artist Ari Wolff, in collaboration with the 14th Street Y After School and Printed Matter / St Marks.
