“Metallic Dogs and Neon Cats” is a collaborative 48-page photobook by 3rd-5th graders. Using combined processes of instant film, digital photography, xerography, and collage, this book documents the scraps and randomness of objects and spaces within a community center. The collaborative nature of “Metallic Dogs and Neon Cats” mirrors the collective elements of shared space; it mimics itself, it cycles through visual motifs (a chain link fence, a fire extinguisher, hands), reinventing and reimagining them each time. Guided by artist and educator Cristina Ferrigno, the artists moved through a series of group decision-making processes to create this non-linear visual narrative.
Citation Needed is an intergenerational publishing initiative, supporting the creation and production of artist books by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Through a weekly workspace, participants generate individual and collaborative books, utilizing photocopiers, typewriters, and a range of drawing materials. Citation Needed provides project-based arts experiences for children while amplifying their voices through the printed matter and book arts. This initiative is led by artist Ari Wolff, in collaboration with the 14th Street Y After School and Printed Matter / St Marks.
