“State Taste” is a collaborative revision of the 4th Grade New York State Test, by 3rd-5th graders. Part lament, part graffiti, part exploding rice cake, this book illuminates the ways in which young people relate to the standardized exams they are required to take each year. Stream of consciousness writings, doodles, typewritings, illustrations, and scribbles are woven together through a process of collaborative editing and photocopying. Supported by artist and educator Ari Wolff, the young artists undertook a playful approach to a typically stress-inducing format.
Citation Needed is an intergenerational publishing initiative, supporting the creation and production of artist books by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Through a weekly workspace, participants generate individual and collaborative books, utilizing photocopiers, typewriters, and a range of drawing materials. Citation Needed provides project-based arts experiences for children while amplifying their voices through the printed matter and book arts. This initiative is led by artist Ari Wolff, in collaboration with the 14th Street Y After School and Printed Matter / St Marks.
