This book is the continuation of my previous riso book titled an enigmatic system of symbols: found occurrences and form study, a type specimen for an invented script and its associated typeface.
Each one of the 26 characters is reinterpreted here through an illustration, sometimes in pairs. Each illustration is a linocut that was carved, printed, scanned, photoshopped in a variety of ways, and eventually printed with the risograph. The accompanying texts are set in the original typeface.
The idea is somewhat similar to that of illuminated manuscripts, hence the title, ‘ex lumine’. Again I want to push the question of the intrinsic meaning of letterforms, how they make us feel, particularly when we can’t read them, and in this case when they are particularly elaborate. -Publisher
