Join us for the launch of a new publication, shadows nearby, by New York-based artist Andrea Geyer at Printed Matter Chelsea (231 11th Avenue). Geyer will be joined in conversation by book contributors Thomas J. Lax (Curator of Media and Performance, MoMA) and Dr. Ksenia M. Soboleva (Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the New York Historical Society), who will discuss the artist’s installation “Feeding the Ghost” in relation to her recent publication.

ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS

Andrea Geyer is a New York based artist working across multiple media, incorporating text, photography, painting, sculpture, video and performance. She studied Photography and Film Design at the Fachhochschule Bielefeld and Fine Art at the Braunschweig University of Art, Germany and is a 2000 graduate of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, NY, USA.

Geyer’s solo projects have been exhibited at museums including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland (2018); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, USA (2018); The Museum of Modern Art, NY, USA (2015); Whitney Museum, NY, USA (2015), as well as many others. In 2007, Geyer’s lauded project, Spiral Lands was selected for inclusion in the twelfth edition of Documenta, and then traveled to MoMA, NY (2008) and Argos Center for Art and Media, Brussels (2010). shadows nearby is her third monograph. It includes essays by Thomas Lax and Ksenia Soboleva and explores in detail her multimedia installation, Feeding the Ghosts (2019). A solo exhibition of Geyer’s newest work, plein-air, is on view at Hales New York from February 2 - March 11.

Dr. Ksenia M. Soboleva is a New York based writer and art historian specializing in queer art and culture. She holds a PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, with a dissertation titled “Fragments: Art, AIDS, and Lesbian Identity in the United States.” Her writings have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, BOMB Magazine, Hyperallergic, and various exhibition catalogues. She has curated exhibitions at Candice Madey Gallery, Tappeto Volante, La MaMa Galleria, and Assembly Room. Soboleva was the 2020-2021 Vilcek Curatorial Fellow at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and is currently the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Gender and LGBTQ+ History at the New York Historical Society.

Thomas Jean Lax is a curator, writer, and scholar specializing in black art and performance. At the Museum of Modern Art, they co-organized the exhibition Just Above Midtown: 1974 to the Present (2022) with Lilia Rocio Taboada in collaboration with JAM’s founder Linda Goode Bryant. In 2019, they worked with colleagues across MoMA on a major rehang of its collection and co-organized the exhibition Judson Dance Theater: The Work is Never Done (2018) with Ana Janevski and Martha Joseph. Their other collaboratively-organized exhibitions include the Projects Series for emerging artists; Unfinished Conversations, inspired by the cultural theorist Stuart Hall; the contemporary art quintennial, Greater New York; and commissions with artists including Neïl Beloufa, Maria Hassabi, and Steffani Jemison. Previously, they worked at The Studio Museum in Harlem for seven years, where they organized When the Stars Begin to Fall: Imagination and the American South and participated in the landmark “f show” contemporary art series.
