Hanneline Røgeberg - Double Blind

Book Launch at Printed Matter Chelsea
April 28, 2023
6-8PM

Join Space Sisters Press for the launch of Hanneline Røgeberg’s Double Blind at Printed Matter Chelsea. Double Blind presents double-handed pen and ink drawings and monotypes made from a set of surveillance stills. The publication includes a short prose essay by the artist and an essay by Faye Hirsch.

The project, started in the spring of 2021, drew inspiration from the methodology of sociologist Stein Bråten’s studies of mirroring and repetition in infant-caretaker relations featured in his book Roots and Collapse of Empathy, where a later added chapter also considers the Norwegian terrorist acts of July 22, 2011.

The book’s source stills present nondescript views of historic and contemporary events, such as the Government District in Oslo, and from Christchurch, New Zealand, El Paso, Texas, and Bærum, Norway, where copycat terrorists recognized themselves in the signals left eight years earlier by the Norwegian gunman. Røgeberg’s blind contour drawings attempt to witness and record these sites, in a format opened to make room for what else might be reflected in them.

As Røgeberg’s hands draw source-specific, blind contour lines, the resulting distortions make the drawings appear equally as seismic, graph-like records. They reflect Røgeberg’s dominant left hand, for example, visible as off-centered asymmetry when presented in book format, and show the infinitely variable, always subjective and unresolved results.

Hanneline Røgeberg is a painter whose work engages material processes to override the representational and knowable. She holds a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Yale School of Art. Her work has been featured nationally and internationally at institutions such as Henie-Onstad Kunst Senter, Norway; Museion Bolzano, Italy; CCA Kunsthalle Andratx, Spain; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA; the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Contemporary Art Center Cincinnati; and Vancouver Art Gallery. Awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Award, an Anonymous Was A Woman grant, Westaf/NEA grant and grants from OCA and the Norwegian Cultural Council.
