Join us at Printed Matter Chelsea for a panel discussion between HARD-SHELL® author Joshua P. Matthews, the book’s foreword writer, Sydney Allen-Ash, Art director, Ryo Kumazaki, and Hannah Yukiko Pierce of Small Editions.

This conversation will look at HARD-SHELL® beyond the notion that it is in thrall to a specific brand, and instead unlock and explain its true intention: the book as an independently published field guide, whose contents mark the intersection of function, aesthetic, sport, mobility, endurance and the art of survival.

Joshua P. Matthews Joshua P. Matthews came to NYC in 2002 from Houston, Texas. After over 15 years of working and managing some of NYC’s most notable streetwear flagship stores, he founded COMMA, a multidisciplinary design firm, in 2019. COMMA has a focus in ideation, activation, product development and creative direction.

Ryo Kumazaki was born in the Chiba Prefecture of Japan. He moved to the United States in 2001 and launched the graphic design studio, STUDIO NEWWORK in New York in 2008. Kumazaki plans and publishes art magazines, concepts brand identitys’s as well as art direction. He is also a part-time professor of typography and editorial design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

Sydney Allen-Ash is a writer and strategist from Toronto. She also the host of Toenails, a podcast about running and also not about running, supported by Ciele Athletics.

Hannah Yukiko Pierce (she/her) is the director of Small Editions, a book studio and publishing house based in Brooklyn, NY. Using their experience with fine binding and artists book production, Small Editions collaborates with artists, designers, architects, and cultural institutions to design, print, and bind book and box editions from one to 2,000+. Small Editions’ publishing projects are the public collections of The Met, the MoMA, The Whitney, Yale, and SMFA at Tufts University, among others.
