Printed Matter Chelsea presents artwork, ephemera, and behind-the-scenes photos from the collection of editor Anne Turyn, offering a rare glimpse into the NYC-based prose periodical Top Stories, which ran from 1978 to 1991.

Anne Turyn is a fine art photographer based in New York City. Her work has been widely exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Kunstverein Amsterdam; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle; Denver Art Museum; Center for Creative Photography; Walker Art Center; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

“Anne Turyn, Top Stories,” published by Weiss Berlin, was shortlisted for the Paris Photo-Aperture catalogue award in 2020. Missives, a book of Turyn’s photographs incorporating text, was published by Alfred van der Marck Editions in 1986. Turyn has been included in many publications and exhibitions, including The Pleasures and Terrors of Domestic Comfort, Vanishing Presence, Between Here and There: Passages in Contemporary Photography, Pissing Women 1995, The Nature of Photographs, and The Photographer’s Playbook.

Turyn founded and edited the artists’ chapbook series, Top Stories, a prose periodical, which featured one artist per issue. Top Stories #9: New York City in 1979 by Kathy Acker, with photographs by Anne Turyn, was re-published by Penguin UK in 2018. Top Top Stories, a volume compiled by Turyn, was published by City Lights in 1991. In 2022 Primary Information, Brooklyn, published a full compilation of the entire run of Top Stories.
