David Sandlin’s Slumburbia
Printed Matter is pleased to host “Slumburbia” a window installation by book artist David Sandlin. The multimedia installation includes silkscreened signage and excerpts from Sandlin’s 2009 handmade accordion book, Slumburbia, as well as a two-color newsprint edition. Sandlin’s new books, “Mort-Gage (House of Broken Dreams)”:catalog/31176, “Pur-Ton-o-Fun Co. Scatalog”:catalog/31177 and “Slumburbia II”:catalog/30310 are impressive examples of the artist’s involved graphic and narrative style. In Mort-gage various ghosts and demons of foreclosure and dread descend on a onetime dream home in this rumination on the financial crisis. Printed in an edition of 200 by Le Dernier Cri in France, the four-color hand silkscreen measures 30 x 21 cm, with the cover and the centerfold extending out to be 60 x 42 cm. Pur-Ton-o-Fun Co. Scatalog is a full-color accordion-style compendium of puritanical novelty items, including the Sinner’s Safety Belt and Sin-Away Hood. Slumburbia II is a panoramic tour of a sleepy, cloud-filled kingdom of sloth and lust. This is the tabloid newsprint version of Sandlin’s spectacular 9-meter-long silkscreened book, published in an edition of 1000 and retailing for $5.00. The book is available here.
