Shinjuku Story is a rare opportunity for the public to immerse themselves into the LGBTQ communities of Tokyo. Senju’s photography captures wide ranging scenes from Shinjuku, colorful and diverse night life in the central gay and lesbian district of Tokyo where more than 300 bars are located across two small city blocks. Senju has been a part of this community for the past three decades, interviewing the bar owners and recording night scenes since 2015. He uses his images to celebrate his community, challenging the stereotyping of gay and lesbian culture, and expanding the identity of his subject and himself.
