This is one of the earliest poster editions of Jenny Holzer’s acclaimed Truisms series. The Holzer Truism posters were first produced in 1978 and posted on the streets of Soho and Tribeca in New York City as one of the artist’s first major actions. The posters that remained were then stamped and sold at the A. More Store, a project by Collaborative Projects, Inc. (aka Colab)
In this early edition the truisms are rendered in what Holzer referred to as “broken typewriter” typeface, and are not alphabetized (the editions of the 80s are mechanically typeset and alphabetized). And some of the truisms are variations of what the more broadly circulated later editions would become (eg. “you should raise boys and girls in the same way” in later editions is “raise boys and girls the same way”), evidencing a work in progress.
