“Free Shop” is an interactive performance occasionally carried out by the Danish art collective Superflex as an anonymous gesture that momentarily disrupts the consumer/participant’s sense of reality as it is defined by the daily commercial exchange of money for products and services. “Free Shop” performances occur in ordinary shops selling anything from organic cheese to liquor. When the customer brings his or her goods to the checkout counter, the cashier creates a receipt with a total amount due of $0 and puts the goods in a bag, without ever mentioning “Free Shop” or Superflex. This color catalog chronicles sixteen such performances that took place from 2003-2008 in Norway, Poland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Japan, and Germany. Photographs documenting the points-of-sale are followed by a series of interviews with shop owners and workers who participated in “Free Shop.”
