“The Monopoly of Force” is at once a document of the artist’s flight from Caracas to Paris as well as an interrogation of political militancy and surveillance culture. In the first section, images of the police presence at El Aeropuerto Internacional de Maiquetia Simón Bolívar are paired with text outlining the history and mission of la Fuerza Armada Nacional de Venezuela. In the second, similar images, here taken from L’aéroport de Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle, are paired with text on the police force in France. The grainy quality and unstudied composition of the images imply a sort of surveillance on the part of the artist, as a sort of ironic inversion of who is being observed. In between the images taken at the two airports are images taken on the plane. Screenshots of boarding passes and a full-color aerial view image are also included.
