In 2013, Los Angeles-based artist David Horvitz travelled to the Maldives so he could invite his mother back home to watch “the sun in [their] eyes at the same time”. Their experiences were recorded, then relayed through a pair of 12-minute video clips playing together, if not completely in unison, on two iPhones placed side by side. Horvitz, whose conceptual practice often integrates art in print with digital media, subsequently created a photo book in the form of postcards.
For BOOKED: 2021, Horvitz revisits this work through an installation, once again using iPhones and mimicking a coin-operated tourist tower viewer, this time being set against Hong Kong as a backdrop at Tai Kwun’s historic Magistracy terrace. This latest showing—complete with a new limited edition set of postcards—is part memento, while continuing Horvitz’s exploration into the possibilities for interconnected experiences that in our times of social distance bears repeating.
