Have you heard of Bonita Carter? You can be forgiven if your answer is no. Her story is not well-known. I first learned about Bonita several years ago when I was researching police killings of Black women as part of an exhibition that I was co-curating. For years, I’ve wanted to make a zine about the killing of Bonita Carter. I had been collecting press photos about the incident and always imagined including them. I finally started working on the zine late last year. I asked Neta Bomani who I’ve partnered with on previous publications to design the zine. I am so happy with the outcome of our collaboration. Groundhog Day excavates part of the history of Black people’s resistance to state violence (specifically policing). I hope that when some people uplift the memories of Rekia, Sandra, and Aiyanna, that they’ll now add Bonita’s name too. -Publisher
