Sundrop Cactus is a 2-color screenprint produced on the occasion of the 2017 NY Art Book Fair. Kohlmann’s playful style takes bodily forms and reimagines them in abstract and unexpected ways, challenging notions of gender, sexuality, and identity.
Emma Kohlmann (b.1989 in New York City) makes paintings primarily in ink and watercolor, often depicting figures that abstract the nude body out of the traditional male canon and into a visual language that collapses gender binaries and upholds tenderness and affection. Often drawing from feminist theory, Kohlmann sees the body as the site of politics. Her images transgress the idolized form in order to deconstruct the limitations and categorizations which have been impressed onto bodies. Kohlmann has had solo exhibitions at Jack Hanley Gallery in New York City, Nationale in Portland, V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, and Kit Gallery in Tokyo.
