Conceived as the journal’s final issue, Animal Shelter 5 closes a decade of publication and hovers, fittingly, around issues of mortality, loss, and trauma—charting existential drift, but also finding new eddies of belonging, homecoming, and hospitality. As Chris Kraus reflects, “Things have to move elsewhere. So I think this issue is like smoke, or signal blocking.” Fleeting, ephemeral, nondigital, and nonhierarchical, Animal Shelter is, as Alex Gartenfeld wrote in Interview, “a loose collection of texts, sequenced like a mixtape,” focused yet eclectic. Issue 5 is coedited by Hedi El Kholti, Chris Kraus, and Janique Vigier.
