In No Hit Wonder, Volker Renner draws connections between pictures, music, and memories. He matches photographs from his image archive to titles of songs one would call one-hit wonders. Firmly lodged in the collective memory, the tunes will come to mind as one looks at the pictures—or be heard thanks to the enclosed Spotify playlist—and prompt manifold associations. As though in a musical or mental loop, the pictures recur in the three volumes, though with changes of detail and different songs: vol. I presents the original image; vol. II, a chosen segment of it; and vol. III, the void left by the manipulation of the photograph. The blanks become projection screens, echoes and recollections of pictures that play like songs on the “screen of the mind.” -Publisher
